Lock flywheel in place with BMW special tool 11 2 100 or by
inserting a large screw driver against the ring gear teeth.
Remove the six 6mm Allen head bolts retaining pressure plate. Each bolt
has a spacer on it. Don't loose these spacers.
CAUTION:
Pressure plate is located on dowels, but may still fall off when last bolt is removed.
Remove pressure plate and clutch disc. The pressure plate is
the only thing holding the clutch disc, do not drop it when removing the pressure plate.
Take note of orientation of clutch disc, it must be installed the same way.
Do not remove flywheel at this stage.
Remove oil return hose from top right of upper oil pan.
Remove the eighteen 10mm pan bolts
Remove the lower pan.
Remove the 17mm nut securing gear to oil pump, slide gear off shaft and
remove.
Unscrew the two 13mm bolts retaining the oil pump to the cylinder block.
Remove oil pump and any shims located between pump and block.
Remove reinforcement plate located at the rear of the oil pan. If
necessary, loosen sway bar mounts to facilitate removal of reinforcement plate.
Remove the twenty one 10mm bolts and remove upper oil pan.
Remove connecting rod bearing caps and push rod/piston assemblies up into
cylinder for clearance.
Check axial play of crank shaft by mounting a dial indicator
so that it can touch the clutch face of the flywheel, then knock crank back and forth in
engine with a rubber mallet.
Replace thrust bearing if axial play is out of range : 0.085 - 0.174mm
(0.0033 - 0.0068")
Remove the eight 19mm bolts securing the flywheel.
Remove flywheel.
Remove rear seal carrier 10mm (green arrows) and 13mm (blue arrows) bolts.
Remove crankshaft bearing caps and lift out crankshaft.
Checking crank for run-out
Install bearing shells 1 and 5.
Install a dial indicator gauge on the center bearing journal
and measure the run-out while turning the crankshaft. Take care not to allow crank to hit
hanging connecting rods.
Maximum run-out is 0.1mm (0.004")
Installation
Replace bearings.
Install crank bearing caps in correct order, number 1 being
at the front of the engine. Torque to specification.
Check bearing play.
Measure axial play with crankshaft installed . Loosen thrust
bearing cap (number 3). center the thrust bearing by using a plastic hammer to gently tap
the front and rear of the crankshaft. Tighten thrust bearing to correct torque.
Replace connecting rod bearing shells and measure bearing
play. The connecting rods and caps have numbers by the mating surfaces. These
numbers must match and be on the same side. Tighten to the correct torque.
