| Lift edges of shift boot. |
 |
| Disconnect wiring for illuminated shift knob, if installed. |
 |
| Pull shift knob straight up to remove. A sharp tug is
required. |
 |
| Remove foam insulation pad if fitted. Locate connector
for reverse light switch wiring, disconnect it. |
 |
| The purpose of removing these items is to allow the shifter
mechanism to be removed from beneath the car if clearance is an issue. |
|
Support exhaust system |
|
| Remove nuts from header flange. |
 |
| Loosen 13mm bolts on brackets and remove rubber hangers from
rear cross member |
 |
| Remove muffler bracket and lower exhaust from car. |
| Remove heat shields from above exhaust. Shield styles and amount of
bolts vary between vehicles. |
 |
 |
| Remove the three 19mm nuts and bolts securing the
"Guibo" coupling to the transmission. Leave the Guibo attached to the
driveshaft. |
 |
| Loosen threaded ring at center support. This is best
achieved with two large pairs of pliers, apply one set of pliers to the threaded ring
(green arrow) and the second set to the weld in the driveshaft tube (yellow arrow). The
weld is a rough surface and gives good grip, preventing the pliers from slipping and
scarring the tube. It is also the strongest section of the tube.
Loosen ring approximately 5 turns. |
 |
| Remove bolts from center support, push driveshaft rearwards to
collapse slip joint at threaded ring, pull center of driveshaft down and forward end will
come off transmission. |
CAUTION: Drive shaft is balanced as a unit. Do not allow halves to separate without first
ensuring alignment marks are present.
|
| Remove bolt from header bracket on right side of transmission |
 |
| Remove the four 19mm nuts from bell housing studs. Upper left bolt may
require crow's foot or odd shaped wrench. Remove exhaust bracket. |
 |
 |
Support transmission and remove the four 13mm nuts from
transmission cross member.
If bolts begin to spin, lower transmission slightly to put pressure on bolt. Bolt is
held in place by a rectangle machined section in the bolt resting in slot in the floor.
The slot allows variable positioning of the cross member. To remove the bolt from the
floor, slide it to the end of the slot, push up, turn 90° and drop out enlarged hole at
end of slot. |
 |
| Remove the two 13mm nuts on the bottom of the transmission
mounts and remove cross member from transmission. The cross member does not have to
be removed but gives easier access to the transmission. |
 |
| Unbolt forward end of shifter from transmission by removing
the two 13mm nuts. Remove circlip from selector rod and remove rod end from joint. |
|
| Slide transmission out of bell housing. Do not allow
transmission weight to rest on input shaft. |
|
If bell housing is to be removed :
|
|
| Remove throw out bearing from clutch fork if it did not come
out on transmission input shaft. |
|
| Remove two 13mm nuts and set aside clutch slave cylinder. |
 |
| Remove the two 10mm bolts securing protective cover to the
crank sensors. Remove the two sensors from the left side of the bell housing. Take
note of relevant location of sensors, mark sensors and locating holes in order to return
each sensor to it's correct hole. Remove third sensor from the upper left of the bell
housing. |
 |
| Remove bell housing bolts and lift off bell housing. |
|
|
|
Installation
|
| Place transmission in gear and rotate output shaft flange
while sliding input shaft into clutch assembly. This will aid in aligning the input shaft
splines with those in the clutch disc. |
| Ensure that slave cylinder piston is straight and contacting
clutch fork at the correct angle. |
| Replace gasket and nuts at manifold flange. Use copper nuts. |
| Install manifold nuts and muffler brackets and tighten to
correct torque before installing other mounts. |
| Correctly positioned exhaust must have tailpipes in center of
opening in rear valance. |
 |
| Install transmission bracket on exhaust so that there is no
stress on either part. |
| Install rubber hangers and brackets at rear sub-frame and
position bracket so that rubber hanger has slight tension only. |
 |
| If Guibo has been removed from driveshaft, ensure that arrows
on Guibo point to a flange. White arrows show position of arrows on Guibo. Green
arrows show orientation of those arrows. Each arrow is pointing towards either the
transmission output flange, or the driveshaft flange. |
 |
| Pre-load center support by moving forward 4 - 6mm from it's
relaxed position, before tightening. Ensure Guibo is straight. |
