Replace front crank seal.  S14

Remove the four E10 bolts (green arrows) and four 13mm bolts (blue arrows) from the reinforcement plate at the rear of the lower oil pan at transmission.

Remove the reinforcement plate.  If necessary, loosen the sway bar mounts to aid removal of the reinforcement plate.

Lock flywheel with BMW special tool 11 2 100 or a large screwdriver

Remove nut from the crank pulley, slide off pulley evenly. Pulley fit is a very tight tolerance, it must be removed evenly or will jam. If you pry it, do so from opposite sides at the same time, this will keep it even. s140009.jpg (67908 bytes)
Pry out seal with a screwdriver, be careful not to scratch seal mounting surface of lower timing cover.

Installation

Lubricate seal lip lightly with engine oil.

Install seal with BMW special tools 11 1 273 and 11 1 271 , or by knocking in gently and evenly with a soft hammer.

Install seal approximately 0.5mm below the surface of the timing cover so that the sealing lip is running on a fresh section of the crank pulley's shaft.

Ensure woodruff key is correctly located in nose of crank. If necessary, place a small amount of Loctite on the key to keep it in position while installing pulley. 11gen011.jpg (11197 bytes)
Tighten pulley nut to 440± 10 Nm (318± 7 ft lbs.).
