Pull boot up far enough to access wiring for lighted shift knob (if
fitted) and unplug connector.
Pull shift knob straight up to remove. A sharp tug is required.
Remove foam insulation from inside center console. (if fitted)
Disconnect reverse light wiring plug and pull rubber boot away from
floor.
Feed wiring through hole in rubber boot.
From under the car, remove the circlip and washer from the
bottom of the shift lever and remove the shift selector rod from the lever.
Rotate the plastic ball bushing in the aluminum platform 90°
counter clockwise. BMW special tool 25 1 100, or a pair of flat screwdrivers can be used.
Push lever up and remove from above.
Disassembly:
As of 1988 model year, the shift lever is one piece and
cannot be dismantled
Pull back rubber boot and remove circlip from inside upper
section of shift lever
Pull the upper section of the lever off.
Remove rubber cap, circlip, rubber ring, washer, snap ring
and rubber boot from lower section of shift lever.
Remove plastic bushing by pushing down lower shift section.
Installation:
Lubricate ball socket with grease.
Install ball socket bushing so that tabs line up with holes
in platform, press in until both tabs are heard to lock.
Ensure lower rubber boot is located under floor of car,
sealing all round.
